Amendments to the Renewable Energy Directive were tabled by Members of the European Parliament in June 2017.
Among the proposed modifications, several amendments proposed limiting the eligibility of geothermal as a renewable energy source based on an emission criteria. Prior to these proposals for the RED, these same MEPs have addressed parliamentary questions to the European Commission on the specific case of emissions linked to geothermal production in the Monte Amiata region.
EGEC has produced a paper explaining the issue with geothermal emissions in Monte Amiata, and the more general problem of geothermal emissions and the relevant European regulatory measures to take.
