The EGEC Annual General Meeting 2024 will take place in Paris on 9 September as a hybrid event from 18:00 to 20:00 CEST. We encourage the maximum participation from EGEC members! Additionally, the Geothermal District Heating & Cooling Days, organised by EGEC, will be held from September 9th to 11th in Paris.

This high-level event was a unique experience featuring an inspiring, diverse programme complemented by networking sessions and social activities. The event was hosted at the Hotel Sofitel Brussels Europe and welcomed over 100 participants.

We were excited to present the 2023 Geothermal Market Report, highlighting a year of remarkable growth for the European geothermal sector.

GEO-ENERGY EUROPE project came into play to increase SMEs performance and competitiveness, in all industries concerned by the use of subsurface for energy, in Europe and in target countries.

- Commissioner Kadri Simson, keynote speaker -   Energy prices have soared in Europe because of the explosion of the price of natural gas after two years of pandemic, climate impacts and unforeseen supply chain disruptions. Because of the role of gas as the key provider of flexibility to the electricity system, this price increased has impacted European consumers in their heating bills as well as their electricity bills. EGEC has published an action Plan for implementing geothermal in Europe and as a support for the European Institutions to implement the REpowerEU and face the energy crises. Eight actions to allow geothermal to REpowerEU. Geothermal heating, cooling and power has already saved 10 bcm of gas and other fossil energy imports from Russia. It can deliver a 7.5 bcm reduction in Russian gas imports by 2022 and 130 GWth or 17.5 bcm of gas reduction by 2030. The Geothermal workshop on the Innovation Fund: lessons learnt from the 1st Call took place on February 1st. It was attended by more than 100 geothermal stakeholders. The presentations were followed by 2 cases studies and a very active discussion between the speakers of the workshop. Ugo Simeoni, Project Manager, CINEA, European Commission, shared with us the link to the NER300 Financial Advisory Support as it may be interesting for potential geothermal stakeholders aiming to present a project. The 2nd large scale call for project in the Innovation Fund is open until 3/03/2022.

In order to achieve the European and German CO2 reduction targets, of fundamental importance is the development of sustainable and renewable solutions for the heating sector, especially in the populated regions of North-West Europe (NWE) that largely rely on coal.

The MEET EU project has generated a lot of results and knowledge over the past 3.5 years about Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) in various geological conditions. As we are ending this #H2020 project, we would like to share with you, through this demonstration workshop, lessons learnt on different topics:

Heat represents more than half of Europe’s energy needs and the vast majority of it comes from fossil fuels. Shallow geothermal energy can be the key to decarbonise heating and cooling, being a clean and mature technology that could be installed anywhere in Europe. Yet, it is widely considered as a niche technology, even if in a few countries such as Sweden and Finland, is becoming mainstream and 2 million geothermal heat pumps have already been installed.

The energy price crisis has focused the need to replace the use of fossil fuels for heating by renewables and energy efficiency. Buildings account for 36% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of these emissions come from the use of fossil fuels for space heating and hot water.

The 2021 UN climate change conference (COP26) is scheduled to take place from 1 to 12 November 2021 in Glasgow, under the incoming presidency of the UK. The EU and its Member States will take part as Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The REFLECT project is organising the webinar ‘Efficiency in geothermal operations and virtual visit to Insheim‘ on 4 November 2021, 15:00 – 16:30 CEST (Brussels time).

The Knowledge Center on Organic Rankine Cycle technology – KCORC organizes the 6th International Seminar on ORC Power Systems in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich and its Chair of Energy Systems.

Surface geothermal energy is an energy sector to be deployed more widely to contribute to France's energy mix and meet the objectives set in the PPE. For this, ADEME and its partners (AFPG, BRGM and SER) are offering you an Ad'M Surface Geothermal Technical Day which will take place on Thursday, October 14, 2021 on the ADEME Valbonne / Sophia Antipolis site.

Geothermal energy offers many advantages for the clean and sustainable energy transition by covering the demand of low temperature heat between 10°C and around 150°C. Geothermal energy is a long-term stable and reliable heat source providing high system efficiencies and low surface space consumption. However, the overall share inside the heating & cooling market is still less than 2%.

This EUSEW session, co-organised by Ocean Energy Europe, EGEC and EUREC, will explore the role of innovative renewables in supporting the transition towards climate neutrality. It will highlight solutions from emerging renewables and discuss recommendations for the Renewable Energy Directive recast.

The World Geothermal Congress (WGC) will be held in Reykjavik, Iceland in May 2021 in the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre. WGC is finally coming to Iceland, a country that has shown so clearly to the world how renewable energy can power a modern economy in the 21st century. The Icelandic geothermal community has played a vital role in the technological development of geothermal power for the past decades, not only in power generation but also in district heating and direct use.

It is becoming increasingly clear how vitally essential it is to make rapid and ambitious progress in climate protection. The deep geothermal energy can make an important contribution to both electricity and heat generation, which will also be illustrated at this year's practical forum with many concrete examples.

This year's conference will focus on creating a better understanding of how geothermal fits into the Norwegian energy budget and economy.

The next Celle Drilling – International Conference and Exhibition for Advanced Drilling Technology will take place on 14 and 15 September 2021.

With the official adoption of EU budget for 2021 – 2027 period, the European Union has now officially launched the new EU funding programmes that can support geothermal energy projects.

This year’s conference will be a hybrid event with the possibility of attending either online or in person. The physical location this year will be Villa Copenhagen – the city’s former central post & telegraph head office in the heart of Copenhagen.

On 21st of September 2021, the Swiss geothermal energy forum «Connect» will take place, with an international dimension. The aim is to raise the visibility of the different forms of geothermal energy and to strengthen the connections among the different value chain stakeholders. The World Renewable Energy Congress (WREC) and Network (WREN) is a non-profit company helping foster the transfer of renewable energy technology from developed countries to developing countries. This congress will be their 30th anniversary.

Environmental concerns are a major barrier for the development of the deep geothermal market. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the best answer to assess potential environmental impacts. But the methods to perform LCA can vary widely and take a long time. The experts of the EU-funded GEOENVI project are developing an innovative methodology to perform LCA in a much simpler and quicker way. This novel tool will help the developers of deep geothermal energy projects and decision-makers to evaluate what benefits will result from the development of the geothermal project and allow public acceptance.

Geothermal project development has several risky components, the most important one being the resource risk. Beyond exploration, the bankability of a geothermal project is threatened by this geological risk. The GEORISK project works to establish risk insurance all over Europe and in some key target third countries to cover the resource risk. It appears clear that a de-risking scheme must be designed according to the market maturity of the sector.

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) will hold the 43rd GRC Annual Meeting & Expo – the biggest annual geothermal energy conference in the world – in the beautiful city of Palm Springs, California. On 23 September 2019, a workshop has been organised in Brussels in order to discuss the place of the geothermal sector in the Innovation Fund. The thirteenth GeoTHERM will be taking place in its meanwhile successfully established form on 14 -15 February 2019. The High-Level Round Table on the Decarbonisation of the Heating Sector gathers the leaders of the European sustainable and renewable heat industry associations, organised under the DecarbHeat initiative. The event aims to discuss how the heat sector can contribute to the decarbonisation of the EU energy sector, what policies, technologies and pathways exists and what more needs to be done to put the heating sector on a sustainable path and ensure its cost-effective energy transition towards 2050.

Renewable Heating and Cooling in Integrated Urban and Industrial Energy Systems. In order to implement the agreement on global warming reached at the UN climate change conference in Paris, in December 2015, an almost complete phasing out of fossil energy supply is required by 2050. This presents enormous challenges for the society, but also offers a lot of opportunities for research and industry to make a global contribution to this change.

In conjunction with the 6th European Geothermal Workshop (EGW) in Strasbourg/ France, the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria will hold its Autumn School on the topic of Enhanced/ Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS), 7-9 October 2018 in Strasbourg. The 6th European Geothermal Workshop will take place on October 10-11, 2018 in Strasbourg, France. Every year the European Commission (Directorate-General for Energy and EASME) organises the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) – the biggest event dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe. This year’s tagline is ‘lead the clean energy transition’, and it will cover a series of activities with an EU-wide scope. 

The next meeting of the "renewable energy resources and local authorities" exchange group, organised by the AMORCE association and ADEME, will be held on Tuesday 5 June in PARIS. This national day will be specifically dedicated to geothermal energy (in all its forms) and will bring together between 30 and 50 participants (local authorities and their partners).

The H2020 Cheap-GSHP Project will be present at the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2018 - Mr. Luc Pockele, senior investigator in the Horizon 2020 “Cheap-GSHP” Project, will make the presentation “Efficient and cost effective ground source heat exchangers and pumps”, dealing with the results achieved during the first 3 years of this project.

Electricity has driven the digital era, and heat has been essential to prepare food, to warm us in winter and to run and develop our industries. But all these processes that our modern societies and economies are built on also owe a lot to another decisive service: cooling.

As 41% of natural gas is used for heating of buildings, EU’s heavy dependency on its import from Russia makes the European heating sector highly vulnerable. Clean energy such as renewables and waste heat for heating must be a pillar of the EU’s energy security strategy, as they are vital to reduce energy dependency. The session, part of the official EUSEW18 Policy Conference, is covering various aspects of renewables and their uptake in the heating (and cooling) sector, strongly associated with the topics of energy efficiency. In addition to addressing the role of biomass and waste-heat, the main focus of the session will be on geothermal energy and its role in the decarbonisation of the heating sector.

The biennial EuALF is a well-established forum organised by SPE Aberdeen for artificial lift professionals specifically to promote technology, innovation and collaboration throughout the Artificial Lift Life Cycle. The 2018 edition  will focus on "Maximising Economic Recovery".

The ETIP-DG Annual Conference 2018 will take place on Tuesday 19th June, in Brussels, Belgium. This full day event will present and assess the work carried out by the platform so far and further its work for the development of the Strategic Research Agenda.

A Forum organized by EURACTIV to show that several renewable technologies are available to decarbonise heating and cooling (H&C) – biomass, solar thermal, geothermal and efficient heat pumps. Taking place for the third time in Reykjavik, Iceland April 24 to 27, 2018, the Iceland Geothermal Conference aims to share effective methods and to examine the best practices currently employed in geothermal projects, informing stakeholders on how to make the most out of a geothermal project, and to explore ways in which the value of a project can be increased.

The twelfth GeoTHERM expo & congress, the biggest Europe’s geothermal event, will take place on March 1-2, 2018, in its successfully established form. Accompanied by a high-quality congress programme covering the areas of shallow and deep geothermal energy, the event offers well-founded knowledge for research and practice as well as a perfect platform for exchange of experience.

Held this year in the capital of Turkey, the two-day event will bring together representatives from developers, operators, suppliers, government, municipalities and authorities in the Sheraton Convention Center in Ankara. The 9th European Geothermal PhD Days will be hosted in 2018 by the students from the Geothermal Energy and Geofluids (GEG) group at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), Switzerland.

The 21st International Conference on District Energy 2018, is taking place from the 18th - 20th March 2018 at the Grand Hotel Bernardin in Portorož, Slovenia.

A 3-day intensive course for practitioners and scientists entitled “Energy geostructures: analysis and design” will be held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, EPFL, Switzerland, from March 20th to March 22nd, 2018.

The GRETA project aims to demonstrate the potential of Near-surface Geothermal Energy (NSGE) in the alpine space and to share knowledge to encourage the integration of this technology into future energy plans. District Cooling and Heating: The solution for a feverish planet The International District Cooling and Heating Conference is an international conference that will discuss key issues to accelerate the development of District Energy to help ensuring that District Energy fulfils its enormous potential. The event will also include the Global District Energy Climate Awards which have offered visibility and recognition to the many communities, cities and campuses around the world that have embraced District Energy as a vital part of their sustainability planning.

The SES conference series is a relatively new initiative and aims to bring together geoscientists working in CO2 storage, geothermal applications, deep earth storage solutions and related topics.

The Government of Mexico has teamed up with REN21 to organise the International Renewable Energy Conference (IREC) in Mexico from 11-13 September 2017, within the framework of the Strategic Dialogues on the Future of Energy (DEMEX). MEXIREC is a global platform for government ministers, high-level decision makers, experts, specialists and thought leaders, as well as private sector players and civil society, to discuss and exchange their vision, experiences and solutions to accelerate the global scale-up of renewables.
