2030 targets

On 20 December, EGEC commented on the Commission draft Delegated Act that sets out a reporting scheme to rate the sustainability of data centres in the EU. The Delegated Act stems from the recast Energy Efficiency Directive (Directive 2012/27/EU), which introduces a requirement to report on the energy performance and sustainability of data centres. 

Key new measures for Geothermal include:

The Batteries Strategy cannot be implemented without a sustainable supply of Lithium, with security of supply ‘Made in Europe’.

Geothermal heating, cooling, permanent electricity supply, underground thermal storage, and sustainable lithium extraction are critical solutions to meeting the EU’s 2030 and 2050 targets to avert the climate crisis.

EGEC, together with Bioenergy Europe and Solar Heat Europe, sent a letter to the Commission on empowering the Renewable Energy Directive to deliver the European Green Deal and Renovation Wave.

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the 2030 Climate Target Plan. It intends to increase the EU’s 2030 target for greenhouse gas emission reductions to at least -50% and towards -55% compared to 1990 levels.

EGEC provided inputs to the process of designing the European Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism, which will finance renewable energy projects across Europe.

EGEC and two other associations sent a joint letter to Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, proposing to close the gap in the Green Deal Call when dealing with Geothermal District Heating.

The European Commission did a public consultation about its planned Climate Law. The Climate Law is one of the main political committment of the President of the European Commission for the EU to deliver on the compliance of the Paris Agreement.
