Despite steps to increase the share of renewables in the heating sector, the Commission proposal does not remove the regulatory loopholes supporting new fossil fuel installations.

The European Geothermal Energy Council gives a tepid welcome to the EU Commission’s proposals for the revision of the EU energy framework. 

It was expected that European Commission would launch its proposal for the ‘review of the energy efficiency directive and the energy performance of buildings directive’ this week , as a first step to implementing the EU Heating and Cooling (H&C) Strategy and the Energy Union principles.

The forthcoming revision of the renewable energy directive must act as a spine for the 2030 renewable energy target and hold Member States to account, say renewable energy associations.

Following the public consultation on ‘Planning and reporting obligations as part of the Energy Union Governance’, EGEC and ten other RES associations express their views on Member States’ planning and reporting obligations.

EGEC, together with twelve other renewable energy associations, believe that, in order to maintain global leadership in renewables, "Europe should now make a firm and resolute commitment to a flourishing and vibrant domestic renewable energy market. This is why we call on the European Commission to model an appropriate range of policy scenarios this year, which should include renewable energy targets of at least 30%, 35% and 40% by the year 2030." 

The geothermal industry recognises that the Energy Efficiency Directive has been successful in establishing a number of measures to increase energy efficiency in EU Member States. However, more efforts have to be made in order to reach higher energy efficiency, to reduce GHG emissions and to achieve the overall objective of the EU decarbonisation.
